Fort Smith Police issue flooding alert, warn drivers to avoid multiple submerged roadways

Fort Smith, Ark. – Fort Smith Police issued a community alert on June 6, 2026, warning residents about flooding across multiple areas of the city following reports of heavy water accumulation on roadways.

According to the department, flooding has been reported in several locations, including Old Greenwood from Zero Street to Savannah, Midland and North Albert Pike Avenue, and intersections near Midland and 50th Street.

Additional impacted areas include Highway 271 and Texas Road, Waldron and Rogers with eastbound lanes to Highway 540, 5801 Kinkead, Towson Avenue and South O Street, and Old Greenwood and Phoenix in front of a McDonald’s, which was described as completely submerged.

Authorities are urging motorists to avoid driving through flooded streets and to refrain from attempting to bypass barricades. Police emphasized that even shallow standing water can create dangerous driving conditions and increase the risk of vehicle damage or accidents.

The department also reminded residents to avoid all affected areas until water levels recede and conditions improve. Officials noted that drivers who encounter emergencies or hazardous conditions should contact the Fort Smith Police Department at 479-709-5000, while life-threatening situations should be reported to 911.

Flooding events like this often develop quickly during periods of heavy rainfall, leading to road closures and travel disruptions across affected communities. Local officials continue to monitor conditions as crews assess roadway safety and respond to problem areas.

Fort Smith Police encouraged residents to use caution, remain alert for updates, and avoid unnecessary travel until the flooding situation is resolved.
