Fort Smith firefighters complete swift water rescue training at Byrd’s Adventure Center

Fort Smith, Ark. – During the month of May, members of the Fort Smith Fire Department completed swift water rescue training at Byrd’s Adventure Center, preparing firefighters to respond to water-related emergencies throughout the region.

According to the department, personnel spent numerous hours training in cold water conditions as part of the hands-on exercises.

The training focused on developing and strengthening the skills needed to safely perform rescues in fast-moving water environments.

The department said the training is especially important because of the area’s proximity to the Arkansas River, as well as the many streams and tributaries located throughout the River Valley.

These waterways can present significant hazards during flooding events, heavy rainfall, and other emergency situations.

By participating in the specialized training, firefighters gained experience in rescue techniques, water operations, and emergency response procedures designed to help protect both rescuers and victims during water emergencies.

The Fort Smith Fire Department said the training helps ensure its personnel remain prepared to respond when swift water rescue calls occur in the community.
