Arkansas State Police take man into custody after allegedly causing the death of an officer by failing to stop at a stop sign and crashing into patrol vehicle

Arkansas – A 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death of Ma rked Tree Police Department Officer Trevor Howard following a crash that occurred in late June, according to authorities.

MTPD officers, along with Arkansas State Police Special Agents and Troopers, arrested Kareem Jones on Friday, July 17, 2026.

He was transported to the Poinsett County Detention Center, where he was booked on charges of negligent homicide, second-degree battery, criminal mischief, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, no insurance, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

According to investigators, the crash occurred during the early morning hours of June 28, 2026, at the intersection of Broadway/Highway 14 and Nathan Street in Marked Tree.

Authorities said Jones was driving a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis north on Broadway/Highway 14 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Officer Anthony Johnson.

Officer Trevor Howard was riding in the passenger seat of the police vehicle at the time of the collision.

The impact caused the officers’ vehicle to overturn.

Officer Howard suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Officer Johnson sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated before being released from medical care.

Authorities said no additional information is being released at this time as the investigation continues.
