Fort Smith Police Department highlights Blue Envelope Program to support drivers with autism during traffic stops

Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Police Department shared details about its Blue Envelope Program, an initiative established under Arkansas law to assist drivers on the autism spectrum or those with communication challenges during traffic stops.

According to FSPD, the program is designed to create safer and more understanding interactions between officers and drivers. Participants are encouraged to keep important documents, including their driver’s license, registration, and insurance, inside a blue envelope.

During a traffic stop, the driver can hand the envelope to the officer, signaling that they may need additional time, patience, or clear communication.

Police officials said officers are trained to recognize the envelope and follow specific procedures to help ensure the interaction remains calm and respectful. The program aims to improve communication, reduce stress during traffic stops, and strengthen trust between law enforcement and the community.

Blue Envelopes are available at local DMV offices and at the Fort Smith Police Department lobby, located at 100 South 10th Street. Officials said the envelopes can be picked up by simply walking in and requesting one.
