Winter Storm Prompts Closure of State Offices in Arkansas

Fort Smith, ARK – State office buildings across Arkansas will close on Thursday, January 9, and Friday, January 10, due to an incoming winter storm that is expected to blanket much of the state with snow.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ office announced the closures on Wednesday, citing the severity of the weather system. The storm is forecast to bring significant snowfall, with central and northern regions of the state potentially receiving 5 to 9 inches or more. In response to the storm, state office buildings will be shut down, with the exception of critical operations.

Employees who are able to telework are being encouraged to do so in order to avoid travel during the storm. For those unable to work remotely, state agencies have been directed to implement liberal leave policies, allowing employees flexibility during the inclement weather.

As the storm is set to affect most of the state, officials are urging residents to prepare for hazardous conditions, including potential disruptions to travel and services. Roadways could become treacherous, and the risk of power outages may increase as the storm moves through the region.

With the winter weather on the horizon, state officials are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of both government employees and the general public.
