Sheridan named Arkansas’ Capital for a Day as part of Governor Sanders’ statewide initiative

Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has officially designated Sheridan as Arkansas’ “Capital for a Day” on July 24, 2025, marking the city’s selection as the fifteenth community to receive this honor under the Governor’s statewide initiative.

The “Capital for a Day” program is designed to spotlight communities across the state, while connecting residents and local leaders directly with senior members of state government. As part of the visit, Governor Sanders and state officials will meet with Sheridan’s local leadership to discuss community needs, highlight accomplishments, and strengthen ties between state and municipal government.

Sheridan, named after Union General Philip Sheridan, was incorporated in the decades following the Civil War and quickly emerged as a political and economic hub in Grant County. The city, known today for its strong ties to the timber industry and its annual Timberfest celebration, holds deep historical roots, showcased by landmarks such as the Grant County Courthouse and the Grant County Museum.

By temporarily shifting the seat of state government to Sheridan for the day, Governor Sanders’ administration aims to recognize the city’s contributions to Arkansas’ heritage and development, and to bring greater visibility to local challenges and opportunities.

The proclamation was signed on July 21, 2025, and includes an invitation for state officials to join the Governor in visiting the city.
