Arkansas – The Sixth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney, Will Jones, has determined that officers from the Maumelle Police Department (MPD) were justified in their use of deadly force in the January 11, 2025, shooting of Benjamin Prowell, a 34-year-old Conway man.
The incident occurred when MPD officers responded to assist Metropolitan Emergency Medical Service (MEMS) with a disturbance at a residence in the 10000 block of Crystal Hill Road.
According to authorities, Prowell became uncooperative as officers attempted to take him into custody. He then reportedly brandished a knife, prompting officers to discharge their firearms.
Prowell was struck and transported to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), where he was later pronounced dead.
No officers were injured during the encounter.
Following standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, MPD requested that the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division conduct an independent investigation.
CID agents gathered evidence and submitted a case file to the prosecutor’s office. After reviewing the findings, Jones concluded that the officers’ use of deadly force was legally justified under Arkansas law.
The ruling clears the officers of any criminal wrongdoing.
