Prosecutor determined lethal force by Grannis officer was justified in fatal shooting of Wickes man

Arkansas – Eighteenth West Judicial District Prosecutor Debra Buschman determined that the use of lethal force by an officer from the Grannis Police Department was justified in the death of 65-year-old Darrin Laudermilk of Wickes.

The incident occurred on July 19, 2025, at a residence on County Road 14 after the Polk County Sheriff’s Office requested the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

According to the report, the officer responded to a request for assistance during an eviction at the home. As he arrived, Laudermilk came outside holding a pistol and fired a shot. The officer returned fire, striking Laudermilk, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Polk County Coroner.

After reviewing the investigative findings, Buschman concluded that the officer’s use of force was consistent with Arkansas law.

In her letter to state police, Buschman wrote that the investigation showed the officer was lawfully present when Laudermilk confronted him with a firearm and fired first. Physical evidence confirmed a spent casing from Laudermilk’s weapon, and witness accounts, dispatch logs, and surveillance audio supported the officer’s account. She concluded the use of deadly force was justified in self-defense and in the performance of official duties.
