Arkansas – Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced a vacancy in nomination for State Representative in District 44, initiating the process for a special election to fill the position.
The vacancy followed the death of Stan Berry on March 23, 2026, which created an opening in the Republican nomination for the seat in the Arkansas General Assembly.
In response, the governor issued a proclamation calling for a special primary election, in accordance with state law. The special primary election for all eligible political parties is scheduled to take place on June 2, 2026.
The filing period for candidates will begin at 12:00 p.m. on April 14, 2026, and will close at 12:00 p.m. on April 20, 2026. Officials said the drawing for ballot positions will occur on or before April 24, 2026.
Election results are expected to be certified by county boards of election commissioners no later than June 12, 2026. Certificates of nomination must be issued by 12:00 p.m. on July 8, 2026, with candidates required to file their certificates by 5:00 p.m. the same day.
State officials noted that any additional deadlines and requirements not outlined in the proclamation will follow existing Arkansas election laws. The proclamation was signed on April 7, 2026, and affixed with the state’s official seal.
