Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Police Department announced a leadership transition and organizational change as its Communications Unit officially moved to the newly established River Valley Communications Center.
According to the department, the transition took place Wednesday, Dec. 31, when Chief Danny Baker passed leadership responsibilities to Dr. Wes Milam. Dr. Milam began leading the River Valley Communications Center on Jan. 1, 2026.
Chief Baker described the change as a significant step for public safety communications in Fort Smith and Sebastian County, emphasizing the critical role telecommunicators play in connecting citizens in crisis with police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel.
He said the consolidation of the Fort Smith and Sebastian County public safety answering points is intended to strengthen service delivery while maintaining high standards of professionalism and integrity.
Baker added that 911 telecommunicators will continue to be considered part of the Fort Smith Police Department family and expressed his ongoing support and respect for their work.
Department officials encouraged the community to recognize Dr. Milam and the River Valley Communications Center staff as they move forward in their roles serving the region.
