Fort Smith residents drop off 267,000 pounds of waste during citywide clean-up

Fort Smith, Ark. – Fort Smith residents turned out in full force for the city’s spring clean-up events, disposing of an estimated 267,000 pounds of bulky waste and unwanted items over the course of two Saturdays.

According to city officials, the material collected filled 99 large containers — the equivalent weight of 38 adult African elephants. The final citywide clean-up event took place under clear skies this past Saturday, drawing strong participation from the community.

Behind the scenes, the City of Fort Smith’s Solid Waste Services team played a critical role. A total of 14 residential employees and 10 commercial drivers worked throughout the day to keep operations running efficiently, ensuring residents were able to drop off items smoothly and safely.

Officials thanked the public for their patience and participation, emphasizing that the clean-up events are part of a larger effort to maintain the city’s cleanliness and appearance. The events are held twice a year to give residents a convenient and free way to dispose of large or hard-to-manage household waste.

The city announced that another clean-up event is scheduled for the fall, with dates and details to be released in the coming months.
