Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Police Department has officially opened applications for its Fall 2025 Citizens Police Academy, inviting local residents to get an inside look at law enforcement operations.
Set to begin on August 21, 2025, the academy will run from 6 to 9 p.m. and is limited to just 15 participants.
Designed to offer firsthand knowledge of the work done by local police officers, the program provides an opportunity for community members to better understand policing in Fort Smith.
To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old and successfully pass a limited background check. The check will focus only on criminal history and active warrants and will not be shared with any outside entities. Organizers emphasized that attendance does not grant any official police authority or certification.
“The Citizens Police Academy is about transparency and connection,” the department shared in its announcement. “It’s a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes and ask questions in an open environment.”
Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested are encouraged to apply promptly before spots fill up. The application can be found online at here.
