Fort Smith Police Department launches national speed enforcement effort

Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Police Department is taking part in the National Speed Mobilization campaign, a high-visibility enforcement effort aimed at reducing dangerous speeding behavior on local roadways. The initiative, led by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), runs from July 9 through July 31, 2025.

With the slogan “Speeding Slows You Down,” the campaign emphasizes the very real and often tragic consequences of speeding — including tickets, crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities. Law enforcement officers in Fort Smith will be increasing patrols and issuing citations to drivers who exceed posted speed limits in an effort to deter risky driving behavior.

“Speeding isn’t just a traffic violation — it’s a dangerous decision that can change lives in a matter of seconds,” the department said in a statement shared on social media. “You may think you’re saving time, but the reality is that speeding puts everyone on the road at risk.”

The Fort Smith Police Department encourages all drivers to take the campaign’s message seriously by obeying speed limits, staying alert, and making safety a priority. Officials hope that the increased enforcement, combined with public awareness, will help prevent avoidable tragedies on the road.

“There are no good excuses for speeding,” the statement continued. “Only consequences. Make the right choice — protect lives, obey the limit, and get home safe.”
