Fort Smith Police Department joins national campaign to reduce distracted driving during april awareness month

Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Police Department is participating in a nationwide campaign led by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to address the dangers of distracted driving.

The high-visibility enforcement initiative coincides with National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and focuses on discouraging behaviors like texting while driving.

Throughout April, Fort Smith officers will be actively enforcing state laws that prohibit texting and other forms of distraction behind the wheel. The department’s involvement is part of a larger effort to reduce traffic fatalities and remind drivers that even a moment of inattention can have deadly consequences.

Distracted driving has become a leading cause of crashes across the country. The most common and dangerous form involves texting or interacting with mobile devices while operating a vehicle. The initiative aims to make drivers think twice before checking a message or notification.

In a message to the public, the department emphasized that preventing distractions while driving is both simple and essential. If a driver needs to send or respond to a message that can’t wait, they are encouraged to pull over safely before using their device. Passengers can also be designated to handle calls and texts so that drivers remain focused on the road.

The police also reminded residents that social media should never be used while driving. They encouraged drivers who find it difficult to resist checking their phones to take proactive measures, such as silencing notifications, enabling “Do Not Disturb” mode, or placing the phone in the back seat, glove box, or trunk until they reach their destination.

Fort Smith officers will be visible and vigilant throughout the campaign, reinforcing the importance of attentive driving. The department hopes that increased enforcement, combined with public education, will help change behaviors and ultimately save lives.

This national campaign is one of several annual efforts supported by NHTSA to raise awareness about road safety and responsible driving practices. Fort Smith Police encourage all motorists to do their part by staying alert and keeping their attention on the road.
