Fort Smith, Ark. – Fort Smith police are investigating the death of a 26-year-old man who was found unresponsive on the back porch of a residence in the 2000 block of North 13th Street on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Police said officers had contact with the man the previous day after taking him into custody for public intoxication.
His booking was initially delayed because of medical concerns. He was later cleared by a local hospital and booked into jail at approximately 11:15 p.m.
The man remained in custody until about 2:15 a.m., when two officers encountered him again while responding to a suspected burglary call.
According to Fort Smith Police, officers did not have sufficient evidence to arrest him in connection with the suspected burglary, although he appeared to still show signs of intoxication.
Officers contacted EMS, and the man was eventually cleared and taken to the North 13th Street residence where he was staying.
The homeowner later found the man unresponsive on the back porch and police responded to investigate.
Officers said there were no visible signs of trauma, and foul play is not suspected at this time.
A blood draw is being conducted as investigators work to determine the cause of death.
The investigation remains ongoing, and Fort Smith Police said additional information may be released when available and appropriate.
