Fort Smith Police Department honors retired K-9 Ringo, who served for over five years

Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Police Department paid tribute to retired K-9 Ringo, who served with distinction for over five years.

Ringo joined the department in September 2014 and played a key role in numerous operations, contributing to several seizures and arrests.

Ringo was known for his warm spirit and was beloved by the community and his partner, Sgt. Keith Shelby.

Sgt. Shelby fondly remembered Ringo as more than just a working dog, calling him a cherished friend. “He was great with the family and was always ready to go,” Sgt. Shelby said. “I will always miss sharing my burritos with him.”

After retiring, Ringo lived with Sgt. Shelby and his family until his passing on Feb. 22, 2025.

The Fort Smith Police Department expressed their condolences to Sgt. Shelby and his family during this difficult time, remembering Ringo as a loyal and loved member of their team.
