Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Police Department has announced the promotion of Officer Derrick Dowdy to the rank of Sergeant, effective immediately. Sgt. Dowdy will now serve within the Patrol Field Operations division, where he will continue to serve the community with distinction.
Since joining the department in May 2019, Dowdy has earned recognition for his dedicated service and significant contributions to community safety. As a member of Patrol Troop 2, he has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting the public. His expertise extends beyond regular patrol duties, with a key role as a Field Training Officer, where he has helped guide and mentor new recruits.
Sgt. Dowdy has also been an active participant on the department’s SWAT team, contributing his skills in high-risk situations and tactical operations. In addition, his collaborative work with the Criminal Investigations Division has strengthened the department’s efforts to combat crime and support investigations.
Further showcasing his leadership, Dowdy has served as an assistant instructor in the Fort Smith Training Center’s Defensive Tactics program, helping to train fellow officers in crucial safety techniques. His dedication to fostering professionalism and safety among his peers has set high standards within the department.
