Fort Smith, Ark. – Fort Smith police have arrested 41-year-old William Winters in connection with a May 2 home invasion and assault that occurred in a residential neighborhood.
Winters, a parolee, was taken into custody without further incident and is currently being held at the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center.
Authorities say Winters forcibly entered a residence where he assaulted two individuals, one of whom was a juvenile female. According to police, the juvenile fought back during the attack, prompting Winters to flee the scene.
Following a public appeal for assistance, police were able to identify and locate Winters with the help of community members. He faces charges of aggravated residential burglary and parole violation.
Fort Smith Police Chief Danny Baker praised the young victim’s actions and announced that she will be formally recognized for her bravery in a private ceremony. Her identity is being withheld to protect her privacy.
Police extended their gratitude to the public for aiding in the identification and apprehension of the suspect.
