Fort Smith, Ark. – The City of Fort Smith has implemented mandatory Phase I water conservation measures as crews continue restoring in-town reservoirs and storage tanks to full capacity following a recent water main break. Phase II measures have been lifted, but Phase I restrictions remain in effect until water levels return to normal.
Phase I conservation measures include:
-
Even-numbered addresses may water lawns, plants, and wash vehicles or exteriors only on even-numbered days; odd-numbered addresses may do so on odd-numbered days.
-
Water must not run into alleys, streets, or neighboring properties.
-
Golf course and commercial irrigation must be limited to preserving plant life and conducted to minimize evaporation.
-
Use of water from fire hydrants for construction, drills, or routine testing is prohibited.
-
Only non-potable water can be used for earthmoving or street construction.
-
Washing hard surfaces such as sidewalks, driveways, and patios with city water is prohibited, except as needed for public health by food establishments.
-
No irrigation or watering is allowed between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., except for golf course greens and tee boxes.
Compliance with these measures is required by municipal code. City officials encourage residents to conserve water so reservoirs can refill faster and restrictions can be lifted sooner.
