Fort Smith completes major sewer rehabilitation project ahead of schedule and under budget

Fort Smith, Ark. – The City of Fort Smith has announced the early completion of a significant sanitary sewer infrastructure project aimed at increasing system capacity and implementing remedial upgrades in several key areas of the city.

The project, formally known as “23-19-C5: SSA Remedial Measures Sub-Basins MC07, P004, S006, & Z001 and Capacity Improvements Sub-Basin SK01 – CIPP,” involved the rehabilitation of approximately 354 sanitary sewer manholes.

The scope of the work included replacing manhole frames and covers, making grade adjustments, applying cementitious cement lining, and performing chemical grouting to improve the condition and longevity of the sewer system.

City officials confirmed that the project was completed on April 25, 2025, finishing 250 days ahead of the original 533-day schedule. Additionally, the final project cost was \$952,222.40, which is 1.63 percent below the adjusted contract amount.

Funding for the project came from the city’s 5/8 percent sales tax, which was designated specifically for infrastructure improvements mandated by the Consent Decree. This decree requires Fort Smith to take extensive steps to improve its wastewater management system in compliance with federal environmental standards.

City leaders praised the outcome of the project, noting that completing the work well ahead of schedule and under budget demonstrates the effectiveness of planning and execution by all parties involved.

The design engineer for the project was RJN Group, and the construction was carried out by Krapff Reynolds Construction Co.

“This successful completion shows our continued dedication to addressing Fort Smith’s infrastructure needs in a responsible and timely manner,” city officials stated. “Projects like this help ensure a safer, more reliable sewer system for our community.”

As additional sewer and water system upgrades continue throughout Fort Smith, residents are encouraged to follow updates and stay informed on the progress of ongoing Consent Decree initiatives. These projects are part of a broader commitment to maintaining essential public services and protecting the environment.
