Fayetteville Police Department celebrates dispatcher’s retirement after 23 years of service

Fayetteville, Ark. – The Fayetteville Police Department is celebrating the retirement of longtime dispatcher Michelle Laird, whose 23-year career leaves behind a legacy of excellence, compassion, and unwavering commitment to public safety.

Described as a “steadfast presence” and a “trusted teammate,” Laird served as a vital part of the department’s dispatch operations and its Peer to Peer team.

Known for her calm leadership and dedication to fostering a supportive work environment, she played a pivotal role in shaping the culture of care that defines the dispatch unit today.

Throughout her two decades of night shift service, Laird became the backbone of her team — always ready to support colleagues and lead by example.

Her work didn’t go unnoticed. Over the years, she received four Letters of Commendation, a Community Service Award, thirteen Unit Meritorious Performance Awards, and was named Dispatcher of the Year on two occasions.

“Michelle showed up with excellence day in and day out,” the department said in a statement. “We honor her not just for her professional achievements, but for the kindness, steadiness, and heart she brought to everything she did.”

As Laird embarks on her next chapter, her colleagues say she will be profoundly missed — not only for her skill and experience, but for the warmth and humanity she brought to her role every day.
