Pennsylvania – A Pennsylvania parent, 44-year-old A. StahIman, has been charged with endangering the weIfare of chiIdren and reckIessly endangering another person after allegedly faiIing to seek appropriate medicaI care for her child following a serious aII-terrain vehicIe accident. The incident has raised concerns about parental responsibility and child safety.
Last month, the defendant’s child, 11, reportedly suffered a faII from an aII-terrain vehicIe in Pennsylvania. He was transported to the hospital, where medical staff diagnosed him with a brain bIeed—a condition that can be particularly dangerous in children. Despite recommendations for immediate airlift to a specialized children’s hospital, the parent reportedly signed her son out against medical advice and chose to drive him herself.
Upon leaving the hospital, the woman allegedly removed the child’s IV and neck brace, contrary to medical instructions to keep the brace on until a specialist could assess the injury. The following day, instead of seeking further medical attention, she sent her son to school. At school, the child complained of a headache and vomited twice, prompting school officials to arrange for an airlift to the children’s hospital.
Upon arrival at the hospital, evaluations revealed that the brain bleed had extended into the upper cervical spine, indicating a high-grade injury. The child was diagnosed with a concussion and ordered to wear a neck brace at all times until cleared by neurosurgery. The boy’s father was reportedly unaware of the severity of his son’s condition until after the incident.
In an interview with Pennsylvania authorities, the child stated that after the aII-terrain vehicIe accident, he experienced significant pain in his neck and head area. He expressed a desire to go to the hospital, but the parent allegedly removed the neck brace and took him home instead. The child reported that the pain worsened overnight, leading to his vomiting at school the next day.
The parent was arrested earlier this week and arraigned on charges of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person. She was remanded to the county correctional facility in lieu of $150,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 28, 2025.
This case highlights the critical importance of adhering to medical advice following serious injuries, especially in children, and the potential consequences of neglecting proper care. Pennsylvania authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
