Burn ban issued in Sebastian County due to extreme dry conditions

Fort Smith, Ark. – Sebastian County officials have issued a burn ban effective immediately due to dangerously dry conditions that increase the risk of wildfires.

County Judge Steve Hotz has enforced Ordinance No. 88-13, which prohibits all outdoor burning of trash, debris, brush, and other materials until further notice.

Officials warn that without significant rainfall or an increase in humidity, dry vegetation could quickly ignite and spread fire rapidly.

Judge Hotz stated that the ban is necessary to protect the health, safety, and welfare of county residents.

Violators of the burn ban will face prosecution under the county ordinance and could be fined between $25 and $300.

Authorities are also urging smokers to use caution and dispose of smoking materials in proper containers rather than discarding them along roads and highways.

The burn ban will remain in place until weather conditions improve and the fire hazard is reduced.

Officials are asking all residents to cooperate and take precautions to prevent potential fires that could endanger lives and property.
