Arkansas State Police investigating fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 47-year-old man

Arkansas – The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division has launched an investigation following a fatal shooting in Randolph County that claimed the life of a 47-year-old man on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

According to authorities, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) responded to a 911 call around the 2900 block of Pitman Road in Maynard. The caller, later identified as Christopher Lee Borreson of Maynard, told dispatchers he had been shot. While still on the line with emergency responders, Borreson succumbed to his injuries.

In response to the call, deputies with RCSO requested assistance from Arkansas State Police. Upon arrival and initial investigation, authorities arrested 30-year-old Joshua Kane Smith, also of Maynard, in connection with the shooting. Smith was taken into custody and booked into the Randolph County Detention Center. He now faces a charge of First-Degree Murder.

The body of the victim will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab, where the official cause and manner of death will be determined through autopsy.

Officials have not released further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and no motive has been disclosed at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

Arkansas State Police and the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office continue to work jointly to gather evidence and determine what led to the deadly encounter. Additional updates are expected as the case progresses.
