Arkansas prosecutor rules officers justified in fatal shooting of armed man after nine-hour standoff and exchange of gunfire

Arkansas – Second Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Sonia Hagood announced on March 7, 2025, that two Arkansas State Police Troopers were justified in using deadly force during the fatal shooting of 55-year-old Jonathan Mark Robins of Leachville.

The decision followed an investigation into the February 26, 2025, incident, which unfolded after a tense nine-hour standoff involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

The situation began the previous evening, on February 25, when officers from the Leachville Police Department (LPD) and the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire inside a residence on the 800 block of Elm Street around 5 p.m.

Upon arrival, MCSO deputies were met with gunfire from Robins, who was shooting from a bedroom window. The deputies retreated and called for reinforcements.

As the standoff escalated, ASP’s SWAT team, Bomb Squad, and negotiators arrived to assist. Despite repeated attempts to de-escalate the situation, Robins remained barricaded inside the residence.

At approximately 2:20 a.m. on February 26, Robins emerged from the house through a side door, armed with a handgun and a knife.

He ran toward the open carport of a neighboring residence, where a shootout ensued between him and law enforcement.

Robins was given immediate medical attention but was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mississippi County Coroner around 5 a.m. No officers were injured during the confrontation.

Following a review of the case, Prosecutor Hagood determined that the use of deadly force was legally justified, clearing the officers involved of any wrongdoing.
