Arkansas – The Arkansas Department of Transportation announced that new anti-litter displays will be installed at two locations along Arkansas highways beginning the week of December 8. The displays will remain in place for about a month before rotating to new locations across the state.
Travelers will see a series of blue signs delivering anti-litter messages. The first sign will state that ARDOT spends more than $8 million per year addressing litter. A second sign will ask, “Are you part of the problem or the solution?” A third will read, “Please help us keep Arkansas natural.” At the end of the sequence, five-foot-tall wire mesh letters spelling “NATURAL?” will appear, filled with litter collected by crews in the surrounding area.
Steve Frisbee, ARDOT Assistant Chief Engineer for Maintenance, said the initiative aims to raise awareness, noting that many taxpayers are unaware of the annual cost of litter cleanup. ARDOT Director Jared Wiley added that the Department has a responsibility to preserve the beauty of “The Natural State” and continues to seek new ways to combat litter.
All signage and litter-letter structures were built in-house by ARDOT employees. The first installations will be placed along Interstate 555 at Exit 42 in Jonesboro and Interstate 49 at Exit 91 in Bentonville.
