Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Police Department has released video related to the May 17, 2026, shooting in which Joshua Keller shot Officer Kyle Newman.
The department said it remains grateful that Newman survived his injuries, calling the incident a reminder of the dangers officers can face while serving the community.
Prosecuting Attorney Dan Shue determined that Officers Newman, Martz, Grayham and Tabor were justified in their use of deadly force to stop Keller.
The department said a substantial amount of video connected to the incident still requires processing. Fort Smith police are also conducting an internal review to determine whether applicable policies and procedures were followed.
That review is separate from the prosecutor’s determination regarding the officers’ use of deadly force and remains ongoing.
Police said the video released September 14 represents only a portion of the footage associated with the incident. Additional information will be provided as the review and video processing continue.
