City of Fort Smith urges residents to continue conserving water as treatment plant operates on generator power

Fort Smith, Ark. – The City of Fort Smith is continuing to ask residents to voluntarily conserve water after recent storms in Crawford County damaged the Lake Fort Smith Water Treatment Plant and caused a power outage at the facility.

According to the city, the treatment plant is currently operating on generator power while OG&E works to restore electricity.

Officials said water conservation remains especially important as crews continue addressing the challenges caused by the storm damage.

Residents are being asked to limit unnecessary water use by following the city’s voluntary conservation guidelines.

Customers with even-numbered addresses should water lawns, shrubs, plants, trees and gardens, and fill pools on even-numbered days of the month.

Those with odd-numbered addresses should do the same on odd-numbered days.

The city is also asking residents to avoid watering between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Officials said every effort to reduce water use will help maintain an adequate water supply while repairs continue.
