Fort Smith, Ark. – Fort Smith Police Officer Kyle Newman reunited with several of the first responders credited with helping save his life during a city meeting where officials also proclaimed July 21, 2026, as Officer Kyle Newman Day.
The Fort Smith Police Department said Newman had the opportunity to personally thank three of the people who played a critical role in the emergency response after he was critically injured on May 17, 2026.
According to the department, Ashley Buckner, an EMS dispatcher, answered the emergency call and coordinated the response that sent help to the scene. Also recognized were paramedic Bree Powell and Advanced EMT Carl McGaugh, who were among the emergency medical personnel who treated Newman and worked to save his life.
The department said Newman’s survival was the result of the efforts of many individuals, including law enforcement officers, dispatchers, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, nurses, surgeons, therapists, family members, friends, and community members who offered continued support and prayers during his recovery.
Officials shared that Powell had questioned whether she had chosen the right profession before responding to the incident. According to the department, Buckner encouraged her by referencing Esther 4:14, reminding her that people are sometimes placed exactly where they are needed “for such a time as this.”
The department said the actions of Powell, McGaugh, Buckner, and numerous other responders that night helped ensure Newman survived his injuries.
The recognition took place during a Fort Smith Board of Directors meeting, where Mayor George McGill issued a proclamation designating July 21, 2026, as Officer Kyle Newman Day in honor of the officer and his recovery.
Newman attended the meeting alongside his wife to personally thank those involved in the emergency response.
The Fort Smith Police Department said it was honored to recognize the first responders whose quick actions and dedication made a life-saving difference, while also expressing gratitude to the many medical professionals and community members who supported Newman throughout his recovery.
