Fort Smith, Ark. – Firefighters with the Fort Smith Fire Department recently completed specialized vehicle extrication training using up-armored military vehicles at the Fort Chaffee Joint Maneuver Training Center, giving crews an opportunity to practice rescue techniques in a unique environment.
According to the department, the training took place this week despite sweltering temperatures and allowed firefighters to develop hands-on experience working with military vehicles that present different challenges than civilian automobiles.
The Fort Smith Fire Department said its proximity to Fort Chaffee provides opportunities for training that are not commonly available to many fire departments.
Officials explained that up-armored military vehicles require different rescue approaches because of their reinforced construction, making the exercises valuable for preparing firefighters to respond to a broader range of emergency situations.
The department said the specialized training helped firefighters refine their vehicle extrication skills while working in realistic conditions that are difficult to replicate with standard passenger vehicles.
Fire officials noted that the experience strengthens crews’ ability to safely and effectively rescue occupants from a variety of vehicle types, ensuring they are prepared for complex rescue scenarios they may encounter in the field.
The Fort Smith Fire Department thanked Fort Chaffee Joint Maneuver Training Center for providing the opportunity, saying the collaboration enhances firefighter readiness and supports ongoing efforts to maintain a high level of emergency response capabilities.
