City of Fort Smith celebrates groundbreaking for Next Step Neighborhood transitional housing project

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The City of Fort Smith joined community partners and The Next Step Homeless Services to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Next Step Neighborhood project at South 6th and I streets.

According to the city, the development will feature 30 tiny single-occupancy housing units and an 8,000-square-foot support services building designed to assist adults experiencing homelessness.

The project aims to provide safe transitional housing while connecting residents with resources and services intended to help them achieve long-term stability.

In a social media post, the city said the development will transform what was once industrial land into a neighborhood focused on safety, support, and hope.

The city congratulated The Next Step Homeless Services and the community partners involved in bringing the project to fruition, describing it as an important step toward addressing homelessness and expanding supportive housing opportunities in Fort Smith.
