Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Police Department issued a community notice on Thursday addressing reports of planned “splatter gun” gatherings involving juveniles from multiple area schools.
According to the department, the reported events involve gel-bead or “splatter” style toy guns.
Police said some of the toy guns may have been modified or painted to resemble real firearms, creating what officials described as a serious public safety concern.
The department warned that officers and members of the public may not be able to distinguish a toy gun from a real firearm, especially at night or during fast-moving situations.
Officials said that confusion could potentially lead to a tragic outcome if someone believes the weapon is real and responds with an actual firearm.
Police also reminded residents that a city ordinance in Fort Smith prohibits the use of air rifles, bean shooters, and similar projectile devices within city limits unless specifically allowed by law.
Anyone found violating the ordinance could face citations, according to the department.
The department encouraged parents to speak with their children about the dangers associated with participating in the gatherings and the risks of carrying or displaying realistic-looking replica weapons in public.
Officials said the department will continue monitoring for any activity that could create a public safety concern.
Anyone with information, questions, or concerns was asked to contact the department at 479-709-5000.
