Concerned citizen report of suspicious online sales leads to arrests and helps FSPD clear multiple property crimes

Fort Smith, Ark. – A concerned citizen’s report of suspicious online activity helped the Fort Smith Police Department clear multiple property crimes and make two arrests, according to officials.

The investigation began after the individual purchased a high-end softball bat through Facebook. The bat, valued at approximately $450, raised suspicion when the seller began listing additional similar items for sale. The buyer contacted authorities to report the activity.

Detectives with the Fort Smith Police Department Criminal Investigations Division followed up and determined that around 13 bats had been reported missing from a local retail store. Through the investigation, detectives identified 35-year-old Justin Seefried as the individual selling the items. He was also found to have active theft warrants.

During a follow-up operation, officers recovered a stolen motorcycle along with additional stolen property after conducting a search at a residence in the 3100 block of Phoenix Avenue, where Seefried was staying. Authorities said the recovery of these items helped clear multiple property crime cases.

As part of the same operation, 45-year-old Harley Hodgson was arrested on a drug-related charge after officers found him to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed.

The Fort Smith Police Department urged residents to use caution when purchasing items through online marketplaces. Officials advised that if a deal appears suspicious, particularly when high-value items are offered at unusually low prices, individuals should contact authorities immediately.
