Governor Sanders announces Maumelle Pinnacles master plan, describes it as major effort to expand outdoor recreation and protect key resources in Central Arkansas

Arkansas – Governor Sanders announced the Maumelle Pinnacles Master Plan on April 5, 2026, describing it as a major effort to expand outdoor recreation while protecting key natural resources in Central Arkansas.

The project spans more than 24,000 acres, stretching from Little Rock to Lake Maumelle and surrounding areas. It serves as a cornerstone of the state’s Natural State Initiative, which aims to grow Arkansas’ outdoor economy, improve quality of life, and strengthen its reputation as a leading outdoor destination.

In a statement, Sanders said the initiative builds on what makes Arkansas unique by increasing access to outdoor spaces while supporting economic growth tied to recreation.

The master plan outlines a long-term vision to connect Pinnacle Mountain State Park, Rattlesnake Ridge, Blue Mountain, Lake Maumelle, and nearby conservation lands through an expanded network of trails and access points. Officials said the project was designed to balance recreation with environmental protection, particularly around the Lake Maumelle watershed, which serves as a critical drinking water source.

The initiative is a partnership involving the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, Central Arkansas Water, The Nature Conservancy, and other local and regional groups.

Shea Lewis, Secretary of the Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, said the collaboration demonstrated how public-private partnerships could create new outdoor opportunities while preserving natural landscapes for future generations.

State officials said the plan also addresses population growth in Arkansas and the capital region by prioritizing conservation, recreation, and quality-of-life improvements for both residents and visitors.

Implementation of the plan is already underway, with new trail development and connectivity projects moving forward across the region.
