Fort Smith, Ark. – Second grade students from Howard Elementary visited City Hall this week for an interactive lesson on how the City of Fort Smith operates.
During the visit, students toured all six floors of City Hall, meeting staff from multiple departments, including Planning, Engineering, Finance, Administration, Communications, Human Resources, and Neighborhood Services. The tour provided a behind-the-scenes look at how city departments work together to serve the community.
Students also met Mayor George McGill along with several board members, who spoke with the group about local government and public service.
The visit extended beyond the building, as several city departments showcased vehicles and equipment. Public Works displayed a snowplow and striping truck, while Solid Waste Services brought both a trash and recycling truck.
Firefighters introduced students to a ladder truck and pumper truck, and the Police Department featured a motorcycle, the Scribble Car, and a patrol vehicle. Transit staff also provided a city bus for students to explore.
City officials said the event was designed to give students a practical understanding of how local government functions while fostering early civic engagement.
