Construction begins on solar canopy project at Fort Smith Farmers Market

Fort Smith, Ark. – Construction is underway on a new solar canopy at the Fort Smith Farmers Market, marking a major investment in renewable energy and downtown improvements.

The project is located at 215 Garrison Ave. and is expected to be completed in early March, according to the City of Fort Smith.

The solar canopy will provide shade and covered parking for two central parking rows at the market. City officials said the project is designed to enhance the overall experience for vendors, shoppers, and visitors while also adding sustainable infrastructure to the area.

The 340-kilowatt solar array is expected to generate approximately 500,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. The energy produced will be sold back to the power grid, with proceeds helping offset ongoing maintenance and insurance costs associated with the structure.

City leaders said the project reflects Fort Smith’s continued focus on downtown development, sustainability, and long-term operational efficiency.
