4-year-old died after her parent, who lost parentaI rights, took her from her mom’s home only to confine the child in a room until she suffered cardiac arrest from extreme maInutrition and later died: DA

Georgia – A Georgia man, 33-year-old R. McWay, has been sentenced to Iife in prison pIus one hundred and fifty five years in connection with the death of his child, Tresure, 4. A jury convicted the defendant on fourteen felony charges, including maIice murder, feIony murder, first-degree chiId crueIty, kidnapping, and faIse imprisonment.

The sentencing was handed down at the end of last month by County Superior Court Judge BeIinda. Georgia authorities said the defendant lost custody of the children after a complaint was filed with social services about the unsatisfactory conditions of his home.

The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, in late June 2023, took custody of the children. But within a week, the defendant traveled to Maryland, where the children’s mother, Pasion, lived. According to the court documents, the defendant then stole a vehicle and left it parked as he brought the children back to Georgia.

The victim died several months later after being found unresponsive in her father’s Georgia home. At the time of her death, she weighed only twenty four pounds, a significant loss from the average weight of a child her age. An autopsy revealed that she had suffered from extreme malnutrition and dehydration, leading to cardiac arrest. The defendant was not at the house when Georgia authorities arrived, but his two children were also hospitalized with severe malnutrition and other ailments.

The investigation into the child’s death uncovered a pattern of abuse and neglect. Georgia authorities discovered that the parent had previously lost custody of his three children due to poor living conditions. Despite this, he abducted them from their mother’s home in Maryland and returned to Georgia, where he confined them in separate rooms equipped with cameras.

These rooms had no access to food, water, or bathrooms. Neighbors reported hearing distressing sounds from the home, and child protective services attempted to intervene but were unsuccessful.

During the trial, the defendant’s aunt testified that he had struggled with parenting and job stability after moving to Georgia. She recounted a conversation where the victim had begged her to take her brothers, indicating that something had happened to her.

In response to the charges, the defendant declined a 75-year plea deal offered by prosecutors. Instead, he chose to proceed to trial, where he was found guilty on all counts. The severity of the charges and the evidence presented led to the judge’s decision to impose a life sentence plus 155 years.

This case highlights the tragic consequences of child abuse and the importance of vigilant child protection efforts. Despite previous interventions, the failure to prevent the abuse underscores the need for improved systems to safeguard vulnerable children.
