Fort Smith Fire Department celebrates retirement of longtime battalion chief after 32 years of service

Fort Smith, Ark. – The Fort Smith Fire Department recognized Battalion Chief Anthony “Skip” Mathews on May 8 for his 32 years of service.

Since joining the department in 1993, Chief Mathews served with professionalism and dedication, most recently as Shift Commander for Battalion 1C.

In a ceremony marking his retirement, Mathews was presented with the Distinguished Service Medal, a ceremonial bugle representing fire service leadership, and a blasting detonator in honor of his years leading the Bomb Squad.

Colleagues and city officials praised his contributions and leadership throughout his career.

Chief Mathews retires leaving a lasting legacy in the department and the Fort Smith community.
