Fort Smith, Ark. – Members of the Fort Smith Citizens Police Academy took part in a live-fire training session over the weekend, gaining firsthand experience with the same weapons used by law enforcement officers in the field.
According to the Fort Smith Police Department, participants visited the firing range on Saturday where they had the opportunity to complete a qualification course using both the department’s patrol handgun and patrol rifle.
The event was designed to give citizens a better understanding of the level of training, precision, and responsibility that comes with handling law enforcement firearms.
Officials described the session as an “exciting, hands-on experience” that helped bridge the gap between the public and police operations.
The academy allows community members to step into the shoes of an officer, building trust and promoting transparency through real-world demonstrations and guided instruction.
The department commended all participants for their performance on the range and expressed appreciation for the community’s continued interest in public safety education.
The Citizens Police Academy continues to serve as a key outreach program for the Fort Smith Police Department, offering residents a closer look at the work officers do each day.
