Man Arrested After Striking Officer and Resisting Arrest in Fort Smith

Fort Smith, ARK — A man was arrested Sunday evening after allegedly striking a police officer and resisting arrest, according to a news release from the Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD).

Around 5:30 p.m., an officer was en route to a call when he observed a man jumping into traffic at the intersection of Albert Pike Avenue and Kelley Highway. Police said the man was putting himself and passing motorists at risk. The officer pulled over and approached the individual, who appeared intoxicated, though the intoxication was not alcohol-related.

The officer attempted to make an arrest, but the man allegedly tried to access the patrol vehicle. When that effort was unsuccessful, the man reportedly struck the officer. A brief struggle ensued as the man allegedly refused to follow the officer’s commands, leading to a standoff.

The situation continued until additional officers arrived on the scene and took the man into custody. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

In accordance with department protocol, the FSPD stated the incident would undergo a review at all levels of command to ensure proper procedures were followed. Additional information will be made available when deemed appropriate, the release said.

At this time, the man’s identity has not been released, and the department has not provided further details regarding the nature of the man’s intoxication.
