Fort Smith, ARK — A fatal fire claimed the life of a Pine Bluff resident Friday evening, prompting an investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO). Authorities confirmed that human remains were found inside the home, and though foul play is not suspected, the cause of death remains under investigation.

The JCSO received a call about the fire on Old Star City Road at approximately 6:37 p.m. Firefighters were the first to arrive on the scene, where they discovered the remains of an individual within the residence. Following the discovery, the Jefferson County Coroner and sheriff’s office were notified.

The victim has been identified as James Agee, a resident of Pine Bluff who is believed to have occupied the home at the time of the fire. However, the remains have been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for formal identification and to determine the exact cause of death.

While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have stated that there are no immediate signs of foul play. The fire’s origin and the circumstances surrounding Agee’s death are still under review. The JCSO has pledged to release more information as it becomes available.
